The Angel Island poems reminded me a lot of the graphics made by artist Vienna Rye (website/instagram). I wanted to challenge myself and match some of the lines of the poems with art that they’ve made!

“Even while they are tyrannical, they still claim to be humanitarian.”

Collaged image of Alok Vaid-Menon surrounded by the stars, the moon, and a decadent floral arrangement. Caption reads "They will try their best to destroy you, and call it love."

“America has power, but not justice.”

Collaged image of Angela Davis surrounded by flowers. Caption reads: "The idea of freedom is inspiring. But what does it mean? If you are free in a political sense but have no food, what's that? The freedom to starve?"

“I should regret my taking the risks of coming in the first place.”
“I bow my head in reflection but there is nothing I can do.”

Collaged images of Martin Luther King Jr. Caption reads "I have come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house."

“The low building with three beams merely shelters the body.”
“I will not speak of love when I level the immigration station!”

Collaged image of Assata Shakur surrounded by colorful sand dunes, flowers, and vibrant buildings. Caption reads "And, if I know anything at all, it's that a wall is just a wall and nothing more at all. It can be broken down."

“Leaving behind my writing brush and removing my sword, I came to America. Who was to know two streams of tears would flow upon arriving here?”

Collaged image of the sun and a torn out page of the book. Text on the page reads "To my momma, who has swallowed the amerikan dream and choked on it. To my momma, whose dreams have fought each other--and died."

“If there comes a day when I will have attained my ambition and become successful, I will certainly behead the barbarians and spare not a single blade of glass.”

Collaged image of protester standing up to militarized forces surrounded by roses and the sun. Caption reads "In the context of tragedy, all polite behavior is a form of self denial."
