So I’m not sure this is going to be at all coherent but I just keep coming back to this idea about how interconnected politics and celebrity and I suppose pop-culture (not sure this is the right term I am looking for, maybe fame?) are in this book and in life. I don’t exactly have anything specific to say but I always find it interesting that politicians seem to become celebrities and vice versa while they both do such different things, but like they also aren’t totally different in what they do? Not completely different I don’t think because both can be extremely influential. And I feel like in this book they are even more interconnected than I realize because there are outspoken celebrities and politicians alike disappearing or being arrested.

I’m not sure where this is going exactly but I am interested to hear other people’s thoughts on these two.

Politics and Celebrity

I totally agree! I also saw a correlation between Politics and Celebrities (or rather pop culture). I think in a way the two go hand in hand in terms of how Politics can frame pop culture or how pop culture can frame politics. Especially with Severo Alacran owning a movie production company, he is using his soft power to influence the citizens and thus keep his power.

I also think that the portrayal of wealth and the lavish lifestyles depicted in movies and media gives the people a fantasy to reach for. As we know in the Philippines during this time and in the novel, there is a huge difference between the rich and the poor. Popular celebrities and their exterior personalities gives the illusion that they are living their best life. This in turn gives the general audience hope that they can make it up there as well.
