Hey everyone! I won’t be in class Monday, so I am going to write a short blog post about the poems we had to read for homework. I hope everyone’s weekend is treating them well.
Something that has been weighing on my mind a lot both in this class and in my everyday experience is how awful the United States has treated nonwhite groups. Whether I’m reading these poems or I’m reading an article that came up on my Facebook feed about the Latinx children that have DIED in American custody from lack of care, I am constantly reminded of the heavy toll the privilege I and many others have takes on those who don’t have as much power as us. Just the thought is sickening and these poems were just a reminder that the injustices the United States has committed is nothing new. Of course, reparations were made but can anything really make up for the terror these people experienced?
I know its not much, but this has been weighing on my mind a lot.

The line that says “Even while they are tyrannical, they still claim to be humanitarian,” to be profound and it stood out to me. It reminds me of the all the political wars, especially the Iraq war and the reasonings behind it. The fact that the United States should go into the Middle East to “liberate” the Arabs but in fact the U.S. made situation worse and resulted in terrible consequences. It just really makes one rethink the political discourse and they have been taught to believe about America as a superpower, as a country that “has” to help and always get involved.
