I just wanted to say something about the question of death in some of the books we’ve read so far. What are the similarities between Taro, Kenji, Ichiro’s mother, and the no-name woman that all made them characters in their respective books that the authors felt needed to die? Did their deaths allow for change or symbolize a last stand against the change beginning in their societies? Were they martyrs for a cause, who died to trying to preserve the old ways like Ichiro’s mother or their families like Taro? Or did they die trying to fight against prejudice and for equality like the no-name woman and Kenji? Just some thoughts that I had this week.
