When we consider the history of a nation, we might ask ourselves: Who is memorialized for their contributions and who is not? Whose name is known and whose unknown? And whose voices are heard and whose silenced?
Despite a rich outpouring of Asian American literature, especially in the last 50 years, many of the stories or poems created by Asian Americans remain outside of the traditionally recommended canon or are read simplistically for sociological insight. In this class we will consider the emergence of the category “Asian American” and the superb body of literary works created by people who fall under that umbrella. Doing so may cause us to reconsider as well the foundational narratives of our nation.
This blog will be a second meeting space for the class, a place to exchange and extend ideas. Come on in.
